Finances

Family members caring for young relatives can receive child-only Temporary Assistance of about $450/month via the State of Alaska or Tlingit & Haida .

Social security benefits may be available to a child whose parent has died or is disabled, if a caregiver grandparent has retired or is disabled, or experiences a disability.

Family Specialists can help you identify potential benefits for your family, help you apply, and troubleshoot issues.

Education

Caregivers should be able to enroll a child in school, as all children have a legal right to attend public school. Children also have a legal right to special education services.

Family Specialists can help with school enrollment, school communication and special education services.

Legal Help

A staff attorney is available to help relative caregivers with Powers of Attorney, Guardianship, Custody and Adoption. We contract with a private attorney to assist parents. Our goal is to be fair to all family members, and encourage dialogue and agreements.

To access legal help, call or email our Family Specialists for a referral.

Our family specialists can also work with you to find emotional help: counseling, therapeutic activities, and online support groups. Case management services help you organize all the to-do’s on your list, help with applications, and help advocate for your family.
